Windows XP offers a nice feature which allows you to protect your files and folders with a password.It also uses less drive space and especially useful when you move data between home and office computers , attach it to an e-mail message ,where you don't want others reading or you aren't allowed to use 3rd party apps like winzip(or something else )

1.Right-click on desktop and select Compressed (Zipped) folder
2."Cut and paste" all the files and floders you would like to protect with a password to the zipped folder
3.Goto File->Add a password.That's it....

4.Next time when you try to open or extract data you will be prompted to type the password.

Remember when you add new file or folder to the protected zipped folder,you need remove and add new (or same)password as this feature don't protect the files and folders added after adding password.Once you extract a password protect file/folder the extracted file/folder is no longer protected

Update:Even if you password protect your files and folders ,others can still view the file names or type of content inside the password protected zip.To prevent them you simply keep files & folders in a zipped folder then put it into another zipped folder and then add a password to outer zip.
